Commes des Garcons was launched in Tokyo in 1969. It debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 1981.[1] The business originally began as a side project for Rei Kawakubo who made costumes for styling assignments in the late 60s.[2]

The brand now has over 200 franchises around the world and its estimated worth is $180 million.

Earlier designs included more diverse pieces with three armed jackets, face-covering turtlenecks.[3] More recent collections have become slightly more mainstream with tweed jackets featuring gold flecks. [4]
