Commes des Garcons was launched in Tokyo in 1969. It debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 1981. The business originally began as a side project for Rei Kawakubo who made costumes for styling assignments in the late 60s.
The brand now has over 200 franchises around the world and its estimated worth is $180 million.
Earlier designs included more diverse pieces with three armed jackets, face-covering turtlenecks. More recent collections have become slightly more mainstream with tweed jackets featuring gold flecks. 
In 1984, designer Junya Watanabe joined the company as a pattern cutter after graduating from Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo. Their first show in the US debuted in 1985. The protege of the company
