About

Audrey Hepburn in Cat's eye glasses

Cat's eye glasses are a form of women's eyewear that were popularized in the 1950s and 60s. They had become synonymous with secretaries, librarians and Dame Edna.[1][2] They are known for their horn-rim[3] and flared outer edges where the arm joins the frame.[4] The frames were worn by women in Hollywood, such as Marilyn Monroe[5], Barbara Windsor, Dinah Manoff and Audrey Hepburn.[6][7]

The frames were produced for optical glasses, until 1961 when when Audrey Hepburn wore a pair of cat's eye sunglasses in Breakfast at Tiffany.[8] The sunglasses were called the "Manhattan" and were produced by Oliver Goldsmith.[9] Grace Kelly was also a fan of the brand.

The cat's eye glasses have made a revival recently, with Nicole Richie, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Alba and Dita Von Teese all donning a pair.[10][11]

In the UK the glasses are known as Upswept glasses.[12]
