About
The French fashion house Balmain was founded in 1945 by Pierre Balmain and was one of the driving forces in reestablishing lavish couture after the second World War. The house was known for its luxurious and classic designs, and outfitted the likes of Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, Katharine Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot. Popularity dwindled after Pierre Balmain's death in 1982, and was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2003, and was revived by investors in 2005. Today, the house is known for its edgy and modern look, and has found popularity on runways, celebrities, and in fashion magazines around the world. Fans of the label include Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Sofia Coppola and Audrey Tautou.
